- Combining political economy and political ecology in his research and applied work, while challenging unjust power relations – in part by understanding how social, labour and environmental movements demand and fight for change
- Professor of political economy at the University of the Witwatersrand School of Governance in Johannesburg, following a 2004-16 period directing the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban
- His studies presently address economic crisis from global to household scales; environment especially energy, water and climate change; social mobilization and public policy advocacy; and geopolitics (especially rising powers), and his publications address contemporary problems in South Africa, Zimbabwe, the African continent, the BRICS bloc and global-scale processes.
