“Paper Tigers” Turning 80: Anna Louise Strong at 140

“Paper Tigers” Turning 80: Anna Louise Strong at 140

Born in Nebraska and buried in Beijing, Anna Louise Strong would turn 140 this year. Known and honored in China as Shih Teh-lang or Lao Tai-tai, she is better known there than in her native land, the USA. 79 years ago, she interviewed with Mao Tse-tung, which has since become world-famous, in which the atom bomb and US imperialism were described as “paper tigers”. An author of thirty books and a journalist whose words were read by millions, she traveled the world and counted as comrades some of its most remarkable men and women. To honor the legacy and spirit of Anna Louise Strong demands that we not only reflect on her life, but also that we apply ourselves to the burning questions of the 21st century. This seminar, which will reflect on her life and work, will bring together some of her descendants living in the USA and scholars in China.
